This is the first step for car window cleaning. While liquids with ammonia may work well to clean glass, the vapors released are dangerous to inhale. Applying alcohol will only cause the risk of fire. Tri-sodium phosphate (TSP) has been an effective cleaning agent as well, though it is also harmful to health and can damage materials. Using the typical Windex spray and paper towel may result in streaks. And most Windex-type formulations contain ammonia anyway. Even tap water can have adverse effects, as it contains minerals that are left behind on the glass. If diluting a cleaning liquid, use bottled water instead.
